VIKING Tech Tips: Champion Machines

Champion Machines
Models 303,304, 304A, 305, 306

PROBLEM:

The carriage will not move forward or reverse in the auto or manual positions.

POSSIBLE CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS:

1) Brakes are locked up.
If the brakes are engaged then the carriage will not be able to move.  This is usually the result of a cycle stop problem.  Check the cycle stop input on the input card.  If this is a Champion 303 or 304 Machine then check input 102.  This is the second input light on the first input card.  If this is a Champion 304A, 305, or 306 Machine then check input A2 located on the first input card.  In each case, the input light must be on.  If the input light is not on then there is a problem with one of the cycle stop pushbuttons or limit switches.  Physically check all of the cycle stop pushbuttons and limit switches to make sure that none of them are stuck.

2) Mechanical problem at carriage hydraulic motor.
If this is a Champion 303, 304, 304A, or 306 Machine then check the chain connection from the carriage hydraulic motor to the carriage drive shaft.  Repair or replace the chain if necessary.  If the chain is not damaged then inspect the sprocket on the hydraulic motor.  There must be a piece of keystock connecting the sprocket to the motor shaft.  Replace the keystock if necessary.  On Champion 305 Machines, the hydraulic motor does not have any chain or sprocket.  The motor physically connects to the gear reducer mounted on the carriage.  Remove the hydraulic motor from the gear reducer to check the keystock.
